Overview

We aim to develop the confidence and capability of all students by introducing and using ICT across the curriculum. In order to build important basic skills and competence, information and communication technology (ICT) is taught as a compulsory subject until the end Grade 11.
ICT uses the Knowledge Network® curriculum to enable the students to become computer literate. The Progressive Learning Programme, using ILAMM (Integrated Learning and Mentoring Methodology) covers all computer disciplines including workplace skills, word processing, spreadsheeting, DTP, presentations, graphics, website design, databases and multimedia presentations.

The function of ILAMM is to:

• Promote accelerated learning
• Develop ICT skills
• Stimulate creativity

At the same time, lateral thinking skills, logic and problem solving skills, life skills, self esteem, listening, concentration and memory skills, research, planning and time management skills are developed. Cross pollination of skills develops learner independence in using ICT and ensures the learners are able to move from different software applications quickly and easily. ILAMM actively promotes learning.

There are 5 Levels to the Progressive Learning Programme

Curriculum

The Standard Curriculum includes drawing (Paint), Word Processing (MS Word), Spreadsheets (MS Excel) and Presentations (MS Powerpoint). The Level 3 Extended Curriculum also includes website design (MS Frontpage), database creation (MS Access) and Desktop Publishing (DTP) (MS Publisher.

Timetable

Grade 8:            4 lessons in an 8-day cycle
Grade 9:            4 lessons in an 8-day cycle
Grade 10 & 11:   2 lessons in an 8-day cycle

Assessment

Each Level is assessed with tests and an examination, externally set by Knowledge Network®. Students qualify for a Knowledge Network® Certificate provided 70% has been achieved in the examination.

Homework

No homework is required, all projects/work is completed in class. The onus is on the learner to become familiar with the skills that have been covered in the lessons.

Textbooks

No textbooks or notes are used. ICT is a skill which requires practice. The onus is on the student to become familiar with the skills that have been covered in the lessons.

Progression through the Levels

The Grade 8’s complete Level 1 and Level 2 in the year, and Grade 9’s complete Level 3. Progression from one Level to the next is automatic until the end of Grade 9. At the end of Grade 9, students are placed in classes according to their examination result. A minimum of 70% is required to progress to the next in Grade 10, otherwise the Level is repeated. At the end of Grade 10, 70% is required to move to the next Level.

Re-write Examinations

Should a student not have achieved the standard for a certificate, he has the option of sitting for a re-write examination 6 months later. It has been found that this time enables consolidation of skills. 70% is the minimum requirement for a certificate. Students can rewrite the various Levels as long as they are enrolled on the programme (until the end of Grade 11). Should they achieve the standard, they will be moved into a higher Level, but they may not skip a Level. Level 3 is the minimum standard that we expect our students to achieve before the end of Grade 11. Students are encouraged to register for the rewrite examinations when notified.
