Test Timetable

Test Policy

The Department is very strict on the SBA* requirement in the senior Grades that controlled tests should be of one hour duration. This is obviously impractical in our normal timetable (where lessons are 40 – 45 minutes long), which explains partly why we opt for a series of Test Days, usually a Wednesday and/or Thursday. Bell times are modified to allow for a one hour test to start the day. Boys not writing a test on a particular day are expected to study in silence in the test venue.

The Rector would have the final say with regard to permitting “condoned absences”, such as is sometimes requested in some cases for provincial swimming or surf life-saving commitments. Should this permission be granted, the student concerned would receive (in a similar way to what would apply if he was absent on genuine medical grounds) an assessed mark which would be based on his usual/expected performance relative to the class or Grade average. The class average itself would not be awarded (and never is). The letter of application from the parent and/or the sporting controlling body would be placed on file and would replace the test in the student’s portfolio.

It should also be pointed out that, because tests and exams should not ever be compromised, a student would not be able to write the same test on his return to school after the event, nor beforehand, nor will a test of equivalent standard be set. The implication is that a zero mark would, in all probability, be awarded in the case of non-condoned absences.

In all instances, however, the missed controlled test should be made available to the student as a worksheet, or as a task, and may (in the judgment of the teacher concerned and/or the Subject Head) be used to assist in the compilation of the assessed mark.

*SBA = School-Based Assessment (the new name for CASS)
