Grey Boys’ High School mourns the passing of Mr Geoff Dakin
Mr Geoff Dakin, a distinguished Old Grey whose lifelong service and commitment left a lasting impact on both the school and wider community. Matriculating from The Grey in 1953, Geoff excelled as a prefect, sportsman, and leader, representing the school in 1st team rugby, cricket, athletics, as well as EP Nuffield and EP Rugby. His contribution to sport later saw him become President of the Old Greys’ Union and President of SA Cricket. Above all, Geoff will be remembered for his steadfast loyalty to The Grey and his belief that meaningful service is measured through action and involvement. Awarded Old Greys’ Union Honorary Life Membership, he remained deeply connected to the school throughout his life and leaves behind a legacy of dedication, generosity, and pride in The Grey. Grey Boys’ High School extends its sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

Grey Boys’ High School mourns the passing of Mr Geoff Dakin, a distinguished Old Grey whose life reflected the very best values of our school.Geoff was a proud Old Grey and a true role model for the entire Grey community. He understood that loyalty is measured not by words or memory, but by action. He believed firmly that true service requires involvement, and that contribution only matters when it makes a tangible difference. To that end, he gave generously of his time, energy, and careful thought, always focused on what would genuinely benefit others, and especially The Grey.
It was evident to all who knew him that Grey occupied a central place in his heart. His desire to support the school, and to help ensure that Grey remained a beacon of excellence, was clear in every conversation. It was not sentiment alone that motivated him, but a deep and enduring sense of responsibility.
While his achievements extended far beyond the school, including national recognition as a cricketer, and later as the first President of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, Grey remembers him most fondly as a man who never forgot where his journey began.
Geoff will always be remembered as one of our most loyal Old Boys, someone who left a lasting and positive imprint on our school and community. His establishment of the Grey High School shop stands as a powerful example of this legacy; a practical, forward‑thinking contribution that, for many years, provided tangible support to the school and made a meaningful difference to generations of Grey families.
In recognising Geoff Dakin today, we honour a man who truly lived the Grey ideal. His legacy remains woven into the fabric of the school he loved, and his example continues to guide us. Grey Boys’ High School extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. We give thanks for a life marked by loyalty, integrity, and enduring impact.
