Overview

This sport historically dominated by Australia and Pakistan and then recently by the English and Egyptians, is attracting players from every corner of the globe and the current crop of top performing juniors is as cosmopolitan as one could wish for, boasting waves of players from Europe, South America, the United States, the near and far East as well as a contingent of both playing and coaching professional South Africans.

Squash carries not only an intense level of physical, technical and tactical mastery but an almost unique imperative; the obligation for players to interpret and officiate over their peers, a valuable interpretive skill for any learner in his or her development.
“There is indeed a very important spirit to this game of ours – which we need to cherish – as we do compete on the same side of the ‘net’”. – Dr Alan Colburn – past president of Northerns Squash and Old Grey boy.
Squash is also an excellent game at the social level as it is played indoors and provides, a supervised a physical workout in a short period of time, without threat from inclement weather.

Grey High School is committed to the directive of the WSF on protective eyeware for junior players and this rule is strictly enforced in all training sessions.

Current Trends

There are currently approximately 90 registered players at the school. Grey High has together with other investors, funded the development of The Old Grey Union squash facilities. The Old Grey Union has a strong development ethos and is building a young and vibrant squash club. Grey High School has chosen to become part of this development in order to afford our boys the strongest possible learning apprenticeship to the sport in their preparations for individual and team championships.

Grey Boys High participates in three invitational squash festivals annually, namely the FNB Festival hosted by St. Andrews in Bloemfontein, The Dave Hodgson Festival hosted by St. Andrews in Grahamstown and the Stayers Festival hosted by Wynberg Boys High in Cape Town, as well as in interschools events against all the major sporting schools nationally. These serve as preparation for the pinnacle prize in South African Schools squash; the Top Schools Tournament which takes place in Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu Natal each year.

Our current 1st Team is undefeated in the last three festivals and aspires to win this prestigious event for the first time in the school’s history since 1998.
